Laurens band wins again at Sherburne Pageant of the Bands Posted: Thursday, June 11, 2015 6:00 am. By Meghan McCaffrey Contributing Writer SHERBURNE — Bands came from far away for the 66th annual Pageant of the Bands, but the top awards will be going a short distance back to Laurens. Jeff Manwaring, the band director at Sherburne-Earlville Central School and coordinator of the event, said he was pleased with the parade. “The weather was perfect, we had a nice crowd,” he said. “It went really well.” Marching bands from 28 districts came out to compete in the parade, with Laurens taking top honors in several categories as it has in past years. Other local schools that competed included Sherburne-Earlville, Edmeston, Oxford, Charlotte Valley, South Kortright, Worcester, Morris, Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, Milford, Cherry Valley-Springfield, Richfield Springs, Sidney and Norwich. Many of the competitors were from the region, but one band, Spirit of Madison Marching Band, traveled all the way from Madison, S.D., to take part. Manwaring said Tim Eckert brings the Spirit of Madison Marching Band to Sherburne every three or four years to compete. The band learned of the competition through an educational tour company. “It is awesome to get new blood in the pageant,” Manwaring said. “We love having new bands.” Manwaring said there are three or four new schools that are talking about coming to the parade next year. He said the event may have new appeal to band directors because bands are no longer required to compete in both the concert and marching portions of the pageant. “So (the band directors) can pick and choose their events now,” Manwaring said, but he added that most bands that enter compete in all the events: the jazz ensemble, small ensemble, concert band, parade and drum line competitions. Manwaring said participants and band directors enjoy the event and know that it is a quality event for their students. |
